Week Nine: Reflection

 

After 9 weeks of tough and intense studying, my first term in DMUIC finally comes to an end. It was tough, there are lots of things to be done, and there were assessments and projects coming up one by one. It was not my first visit to the UK, in fact I have been to this country in 2015. The most unforgettable memories were the visit to London, as it was just so similar to my hometown, Hong Kong. Therefore, when I heard about the project, my first idea was to take pictures of London.

As a photographer, there were a lot of skills and things to prepare for a shooting, which I have not exposed to before. As a result, it gave me the opportunity to enhance my preparation and my reflection. I have learned more about writing and research, looking more into the scene behind an image, as well as the techniques that other photographers had included into their work. Furthermore, I have learnt to prepare the initial idea and make it into a project plan, and to discover my ideal customers. This project also have introduced me to resources such as Photoshop and Lightroom Classics, which I found to be the ideal photo editing software that I will continue to use in the future.

My presentation represents who I am and my personality, and it is important to have a well-designed portfolio. I have not tried to make a website before and this was a good chance not only for me to have a try, but also to create my first portfolio in my website. The first attempt of creating a website was not easy, and there were a lot of changes and modification to undergo so that my website can be well-functioned. It was not easy to meet the deadline before 7th December, but there are not much work remaining for all the posts. I have two shootings in London but I have only used the photos from the first shooting because the weather was nicer than the second shooting. If time no longer a issue, London is a place that worth travelling again for another round of shooting. On the photos themselves, I believe I can take the shots much better if I have more time to visit London, since I feel like I haven't truly discover all the interesting cityscape of London.

In the future, I will pay my full efforts in becoming a photographer, that I will be able to display my skills of writing, shooting as well as my portfolio design.

 The second photographer that I am going to research for re-assessment would be William Klein (1926-2022). He was an American-born French photographer, and was well-known for fashion and street photography. According to  Howard Greenberg Gallery (n.d.), Klein did not study photography formally but instead he studied painting at the City College of New York, and he won his first camera in the army when he was stationed in Germany.  TATIANA AND MARIE-ROSE WITH CAMELS, MOROCCO, 1958 The photograph was taken with black-and-white colour negative, as at that time colour films were not widely used. It was taken in a sunny day in Morocco, as we can see the light came behind from the photographer onto the models' body and creating shadows. Processing Post: Shot One & Contact Sheet

 I took my first shooting on 11/11/2023 in London. I have been to a couple of places to under my photo shooting. I have created a contact sheet for the shooting but it contains 55 pages, and I will put the contact sheet into a Google Drive folder, so that it would save a lot space for the post. There was a total number of 1,648 photos and 3 videos. I have used panning, rule of third, leading line and low angle for my photos. Here is ZFC_6659.jpg, this is a night shot that I have taken at St. Pancras Station. In order to avoid being noisy, I have used a very low ISO of 200 and as a result I have to lower my shutter speed to capture more light. I set the aperture to f/4, which is the greatest aperture I could have in a Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4. I shot it in portrait because it would looks upstraight. Diane Arbus: "Child with a toy hand grenade in Central Park, N.Y.C. 1962"

Diane Arbus (1923-1972) was an American photographer, known for photographing "the fringes of the society" (Artnet, 2022). According to Artnet (2022), she was also known for her photographs of children, celebrities and the society, and she committed suicide in 1971, when she was at the height of her career. The image of "Child with a toy grenade in Central Park, NYC, 1962" brought a contrast between the boy, Colin Wood, and the children behind him. The photograph drew my attention when I was looking for a photograph of Arbus' collection "on freak" as I can feel how desperate and anger the boy was. Arbus photographed the boy who was staring at the camera through eye level, for me it created the feeling to the audience that we should immerse to her perspective.
